Public-sector employees stop protests

Public-sector employees have stopped protests as the Labour Ministry has agreed to respect all the provisions in collective labour contracts.

The Romanian National Federation of Public Administration Unions (FNSA) announced today (Mon) it would suspend the general strike planned for Friday, as well as picketing planned for tomorrow.

The decision was made after the Labour Ministry said all of the measures in collective labour contracts would be respected.

Union leader Romel Neagu said that protests would be suspended following talks on Friday with Labour Ministry officials regarding implementation of the unitary wage law.

The 46,000 signatures in support of a general strike would remain valid in case it is rescheduled, Neagu said.

Public-administration employees went on a two-hour country-wide warning strike each day last week.

Romanian authorities are planning to cut up to 100,000 jobs in the country's overstaffed public sector.
