Berceanu says forty two kilometres of motorway could be built next year

Mediafax

Another forty two kilometres of motorway could be built next year, Transport Minister Radu Berceanu said today (Weds).

He said that of that, 30 kilometres will represent a part of the Suplacu de Barcau-Mihailesti route, and 12 kilometres a part of the Campia Turzii- Gilau route.

Bechtel, the US constructor of the Transylvania highway, is due to finish 42 kilometres of highway on the Campia Turzii- Gilau route by the end of this year.

The construction of the Transylvania Highway, linking the central Romanian city of Brasov to Bors, on the western border with Hungary, started in 2004 based on a 2.2 billion Euros contract with Bechtel.

Works were halted in mid-2005, when authorities started looking into contracts concluded under the previous government. The deadline for the completion of work was extended to 2013 from the initial date of 2012.
