First swine flu death in Romania

Swine flu has claimed its first victim in Romania, the Health Ministry has confirmed.

Ministry secretary of state Adrian Streinu-Cercel said today (Mon) the dead man was from Siret, in the northeastern county of Suceava, bordering Ukraine.

He added the 43-year-old had died on November 20 after he had been admitted to a local infectious diseases hospital with moderate flu symptoms. But the infection worsened quickly in the patient who suffered from obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure and he died of respiratory and heart failure in an ambulance while he was being transferred to the infectious diseases hospital in Iasi, eastern Romania.

Ten H1N1 patients are on life support at the infectious diseases hospital in Iasi, Streinu-Cercel also revealed.

The number of swine flu infections in Romania is nearing 2,000 but most patients have suffered mild forms of the illness so far, according to health authorities.
