Court allows referendum alongside elections

Romanian Times

The Bucharest Court of Appeal has given the green light to hold a referendum on the future size of parliament on the same day as the presidential elections.

The court today (Thurs) rejected complaints by third-sector organisations about the timing of the referendum.

They had claimed people had not been properly informed about the referendum.

Presidential elections, and now the referendum, are to take place this Sunday (22 November).

President Traian Basescu issued a decree last month allowing a referendum on making parliament a single chamber body as opposed to its current two houses and reducing the number of MPs to a maximum of 300 from the current 471.
