US Ambassador to Bucharest Mark H. Gitenstein has said the United States is not backing any specific candidate in Romania’s presidential elections this weekend.
"I urge Romanian citizens to examine all the candidates and cast an informed vote on election day," he said today (Weds).
"Everyone wants to know immediately where the U.S. stands, especially regarding the upcoming election. But we don't have a candidate. We have to be careful not to make statements on that front that could be misinterpreted, because the U.S. is not supporting a candidate," Gitenstein said in an interview published Monday on a blog hosted by the Wall Street Journal.
Romania, which holds presidential elections on November 22 with a runoff on December 6, is a NATO member and a long-time ally of the United States.
