Cervical cancer vaccination campaign to begin soon

Romanian Times

One in two Romanian parents would agree to have their daughters vaccinated against cervical cancer, according to a poll conducted by the Health Ministry.

Ninety per cent of respondents said the HPV vaccine should be free within the national vaccination programme, and 24 per cent said they needed more information before making a decision.

Romania will start a cervical cancer vaccination campaign on 23 November.

The first stage of the programme will last until 30 November and target sixth and seventh graders.

The campaign will be resumed next year, in January and in May, according to the Health Ministry.

Vaccination is not mandatory but is strongly recommended by national and international medical authorities because it is very efficient in preventing the disease.

Cristian-Anton Irimie, Health Ministry state secretary, said: "Over 3,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year in Romania. Some 2,000 deaths are registered annually."

Irimie also said vaccinations and regular screenings could prevent 95 per cent of cervical cancer cases.

When the campaign started in 2008, the ministry used 8,000 doses of vaccine to vaccinate about 2,300 girls who had agreed to be vaccinated.
