Official says 3,300 to 6,000 fatalities likely from swine flu

Health Ministry State Secretary Adrian Streinu-Cercel, who resigned today (Tues), said Romania should be prepared for 3,300 to 6,000 fatalities from swine flu.

The Romanian High Council for National Defense (CSAT) was to have met this afternoon at the presidential palace to analyze the evolution of swine flu in Romania and measures proposed by the government to deal with it.

Romania has put all its hospitals under quarantine to help prevent the spread of the virus that causes the flu and will start a vaccination campaign using a locally-made vaccine later this month.

Romania has so far registered 581 cases of infection by the AH1N1 virus, but most patients have had mild forms of swine flu, and no one has died from the illness.

Eighteen deaths from swine flu have been reported around the world over the past 24 hours, raising the global death toll to 6,171.
