Over 9,000 people in Bucharest have been bitten by stray dogs from the beginning of the year until the end of July, according to local authorities.
A total of 9,178 people were victims of stray dogs, including 7,500 adults and 1,678 children, according to a report from infectious diseases institute Matei Bals.
Simona Panaitescu, head of the Administration for Monitoring Stray Dogs, presented results today (Tues) obtained by the National Cantacuzino Research and Development Institute for Microbiology and Immunology following tests on over 100 stray dogs to track leptospirosis.
Panaitescu said 38 of the 103 tested dogs were infected with the leptospira virus, claiming that called for an amendment of the law making it illegal to leave stray dogs, although neutered, on the streets where they keep attacking people.
