A Romanian suspected of attempted rape was arrested at the end of last week in L'Aquila in central Italy.
Marius Ioan, 35, is suspected of having tried to rape a woman in the San Sisto tent camp. According to the woman, Ioan was completely drunk and armed with a knife when he tried to rape her on the night of 20/21 August.
He had already arranged a meeting with some fellow countrymen who would help him flee back to Romania, but Ioan found policemen waiting for him at the venue of the meeting.
When police arrested him, he had a knife on his person.
Ioan is in detention in L'Aquila pending completion of a police investigation.
