Five Israelis lose their passports in human-egg-trafficking case

Anca Enoiu

The police have confiscated the passports of five Israelis suspected of involvement in a human-egg trafficking case at private fertility clinic Sabyc in Bucharest.

Two clinic employees, Israeli citizens Professor Nathan Levitt and Doctor Genya Ziskind, have been ordered not to leave Romania, and police have confiscated the passports of five other Israelis suspected of involvement in the case.

Ynetnews.com has reported a Bucharest court decided yesterday to put three suspects detained during the investigation of human-egg trafficking into preventive detention for 30 days.

The suspects are Sabyc clinic chief Harry Mironescu, his son Yair Miron and Cecilia Borza. They have been charged with criminal conspiracy and trafficking in human eggs for material gain. The three have appealed the court’s ruling.

Romanian authorities on Sunday detained thirty Israelis working at the clinic in Bucharest who were suspected of human-egg and stem-cell trafficking but most were released within a few hours after having been questioned.

Romanian organized crime prosecutors have been investigating members of a network who allegedly brought couples who couldn’t have children to Romania and then got in touch with people who donate human eggs for money.
