Romanian President Traian Basescu signed today (Fri) decrees promulgating the country's new Civil Code and Criminal Code.
The Romanian government assumed responsibility in Parliament for the Criminal and Civil Codes on 22 June.
However, the Civil Procedure Code and Criminal Procedure Code are still being debated in Parliament after lawmakers decided at a plenary meeting on 22 June to extend the mandate of the special committee analysing the codes until 15 September 2009.
According to a preliminary report by the European Commission on the Romanian justice system, the official version of which will be published on 22 July, the adoption of the Criminal and Civil Codes in June represented "a true political commitment and a major step towards a more-efficient legal system."
The report says the two codes are expected to enter into force along with the procedural codes in 2011 "after being debated and approved by parliamentary procedure."
