Auto maker Ford announced today (Weds) it would produce around 45,000 to 50,000 units of the B-Max model, at the plant in Craiova, southern Romania.
Jan Gijsen, CEO and president of Ford Romania, said production would start in the second quarter.
For 2013, there are 100,000 B-Max units planned to be produced by Ford at the Craiova plant.
The production of engines for other Ford plants is also planned and will increase at the Romanian plant.
The new B-Max model was announced last year, as a new small car with sliding doors.
Ford sold only 5,547 units last year in Romania.
The U.S. carmaker has invested 350 million Euros so far in operations carried out in Craiova.
Ford announced last autumn that it would postpone the start of the production of small class cars at Craiova for one year, which should be produced at a rate of 150,000 units per year.
Ford became the main shareholder in the Craiova-based plant in 2007 after buying a 72.4 per cent stake from the Romanian state for 57 million Euros. Ford later increased its stake to over 90 per cent.
The U.S. car manufacturer launched its first Transit Connect model assembled in Craiova in September 2009.
