Nearly 20,000 Romanian firms entered insolvency last year, ten per cent less than a year earlier, according to the Trade Registry data.

There were 19,651 firms which entered insolvency last year, down from 21,700 firms in 2010.

Most insolvencies were registered in Bucharest - 1,880, followed by Bihor county - 1,320 and Constanta - 1,304.

The county with the smallest number of firms which went bankrupt was Suceava - with only one reported.

Most firms which went bankrupt were from the sector of commerce (7,800), followed by industry and construction.

Some 21,221 firms were suspended from activity, a third compared to the 66,420 in 2010.

There were 130,162 new firms registered, which is more than 119,048 registered in 2010.

At the end of December 2011, there were 951,800 firms active in Romania.
