Metro opens online store in Romania

German supermarket chain Metro Cash & Carry announced it had opened an online store in Romania, this being a premiere for supermarkets in Romania.

The online store Metro Office Direct offers over 4,500 products for office, furniture, electronics, IT, home appliances and cleaning products.

Marc Carena, Director Clients Management Metro Cash & Carry Romania, said in a statement:
"The market in Romania needed such a service and we are sure this initiative will prove successful."

In Romania, Metro has 32 stores, the first opened in 1996, and the group had sales of over 1.25 billion Euros in 2010, according to reports.

According to the Romanian Embassy in Berlin data, quoted by Agerpres, the German Group Metro AG invested over 1.1 billion Euros in Romania and has over 14,000 employees here.

German Metro Cash & Carry has over 700 stores in over 30 countries and over 100,000 employees. In 2010, the company reported total sales of 31 billion Euros. Metro Cash & Carry is a division of Metro Group, which had total sales of 67 billion Euros in 2010.

German investments in Romania totalled 3.84 billion Euros by 30 September 2011, according to reports, Germany is the third largest investor in Romania, after The Netherlands and Austria. Most importantly, German investments in Romania are in the automotive sector, aeronautics, electronics parts, energy, construction, transport, infrastructure and commerce.
