Hit by the economic crisis, Romanians are buying fewer personal-care and cleaning products, results of a new survey by GfK show.
The value of purchases of household goods dropped by four per cent year-on-year during the first half of the year, the first decline in the last 10 years.
Supermarkets have been the most affected, with sales down by nine per cent in value.
Consumer goods accounted for 45 per cent of household expenses from January to June, up from 43 per cent in the same period a year earlier.
Only discount stores recorded an increase in sales, which were up by 11 per cent.
According to GfK, hypermarkets raised their market share to 21 per cent in the first half of 2010, up from 20 per cent a year earlier, while supermarkets' market share decreased from 13 to 12 per cent.
