Twenty-five people accused of real-estate fraud

Romanian Times

A bank manager, three lawyers and an official at the Properties Registry are under investigation by special brigade police DIICOT for real-estate fraud amounting to up to one million Euros, it was revealed today (Thurs).

Twenty-five people have been accused of having formed a criminal group and used false documents to obtain deserted properties or land in Bucharest. The group used employees of the state and banks and lawyers to make the documents they needed as genuine as possible.

The group used false property documents and inheritance certificates for bank loans for the purchase of properties and for their subsequent sale without their real owners knowing anything about it.

DIICOT investigators conducted 47 house searches today (Thurs) in Bucharest and took 45 persons into custody for hearings.

Investigations are continuing in the case.
