Tax on food will push off multinational producers, says expert

The tax on fast food will lead to higher prices and will determine multinational companies to move to other countries, industry experts say.

More imports will then occur, Food Industry Federation president Dragos Frumosu told Mediafax yesterday (Weds).

Frumosu criticized the fact that the decision has already been drafted and the Government wants talks with social partners "now, in the 12th hour."

Prices will be higher and sales lower, small enterprises will close down and multinational companies will move to other countries, leading to a rise in unemployment, the union leader said.

The Health Ministry's tax on fast food products will enter force on 1 March, according to the draft law which is currently open to public debate.

The tax will be applied to companies which produce, import or prepare fast food products, including bakery products, snacks, chips and beverages.

The amount of the tax has not yet been disclosed.

Money raised from the tax would be used for infrastructure and health programmes, the minister said.
