Rod Skewered: Builder Kebabbed by Steel Pole

Kathryn Quinn

Construction worker Andrei Lvanov has astonished medics after he survived being kebabbed by a five foot steel rod in a freak accident on a Russian building site.

Andrei, 23, was pierced from his throat to his belly button after a workmate dropped the rod from scaffolding above him on the site in Rostov.

"He heard a noise above him, he looked up and it went straight through his throat like a spear," said one builder.

"It's lucky he looked up, otherwise it would have gone straight through the top of his head," they added.

It took seven surgeons nearly eight hours to remove the rod from Andrei's chest after a series of scans and X-rays traced its progress through his body.

"He's extremely lucky. The rod passed close to his heart but managed to miss it and all the major blood vessels," said Dr Aslan Gaebekov, who performed the op.

"Some minor organs were damaged but he is very strong and is recovering well," he added.
