Astonished police have told how they were called in to round up a camel that had fled after getting the hump with life at a visiting circus.
The officers - from Dortmund, Germany - at first thought emergency calls from witnesses were a series of pranks.
"They started to come in from all over the town and we thought it was a group of kids mucking about," said one officer.
"It was only when we realised there was a circus in town that we put two and two together," they added.
The desert beast had managed to give its keepers the slip and strolled into town without anyone noticing.
Police and vets managed to coral the camel, and then called the circus to come and get it.
"At first they denied any knowledge of it, which we thought was a bit odd," said a police spokesman.
"Then they came back, very embarrassed, and admitted yes one of their camels had gone missing and they were on their way," they added.
