A woman who left a ransom-style note as a Valentine's prank has been warned she could be fined for wasting police time after she sparked a full scale alert.
Terrified Annika Bauer, 23, went to police when a key and a note made up of cut out words from newspapers arrived at her home in Hamburg, Germany.
The chilling letter said: "Find the locker this key belongs to and you will discover the truth."
"The girl was terrified. Anyone would be after getting that through the letter box," said one officer.
Annika and her boyfriend stayed under police protection while officers staged a city-wide hunt for the locker before tracking it down in Hamburg's main railway station.
But inside they found just a present and a car from Annika's sister.
Angry police have now warned the prankster she might be forced to pay the full cost of the investigation.
A police spokesman said: "It was a thoughtless joke that wasted a lot of police manpower and kept us from investigating real crimes."
"This could have lead to the station being evacuated or trains being cancelled.
"We had to treat this as a serious threat and had many people working on the investigation," they added.
