Crushing Blow On Crime

Kathryn Quinn

In a crushing blow for crooked taxis, police are to destroy nearly 400 unlicensed cabs seized during a crackdown in central China.

The taxis were confiscated in Hefei, Anhui province after complaints from legitimate cab owners.

All have fake registration plates, taxi signs and are painted the same distinctive bright green and genuine taxis.

Police say the booming city has been plagued by fleets of bogus cabs run by local crime lords.

"They have no insurance, no safety certificates and no right to be on the road," said a police spokesman.

"They are a danger to their passengers, their drivers and everyone around them.

"Their drivers all work for crime gangs so you are just as likely to be mugged as to be taken where you want to go," they explained.

After crushing, the remains of the car will be sent to local recycling plants, say officials.

"We are very green. There will be no waste and everything will be recycled," said one.
