Alive by a Whisker: Kitten Thrown Down the Rubbish Chute

Kathryn Quinn

This lucky kitten missed death by a whisker when it was chucked 120ft down a rubbish chute at an apartment block in Berlin, Germany.

The helpless moggie was found by the block's janitor when he went to empty the bins.

"I heard this very soft mewing and I thought I was hearing things.

"Then I saw these little eyes peering out of the darkness and I managed to coax her out," he explained.

The young puss - now being cared for at an animal refuge - is recovering from minor scrapes and shock.

"She was very lucky and certainly used up one or two of her nine lives.

"And she probably wouldn't be here today if the janitor hadn't heard her before the dustmen collected the bins," said a spokesman.

"Whoever did this ought to be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. Animals aren't trash that you can throw out when you're tired of them," they added.
