Pilots New Jackets Bomb

Kathryn Quinn

Indian airline officials have drawn flak over new pilots' outfits based on World War II bomber crew's uniforms.

The country's IndiGo Airlines launched the new kit this week claiming the pilots' jackets would "make them look sharp."

Their short jackets are based on the battledress jackets issued to RAF pilots throughout the war.

But the outfits have been shot down by industry experts who say it glorifies killing.

"Just let me say that when you're flying a passenger plane the things you don't want to remind them of are death and the possibility of crashing, which is the message these jackets send out," said one.

And fashion analyst Sunil Mehra told local media: "War carries bad memories for many people and I'm not sure it will be appreciated."

During the war, hundreds of Indian pilots flew with RAF squadrons and customised their battledress jackets with gaudy images of successful raids, nicknames, and totals for the number of planes downed and bombs dropped.

But the jackets' creator has shrugged off the criticism.

"This is a pioneering design and pioneers are always criticised," said designer Rajesh Pratap Singh.

IndiGo president Aditya Ghosh added: "He's done a phenomenal job. It's classy."
