Tunnel Vision

Kathryn Quinn

It's the 30 million GBP real life road to nowhere.

Government bunglers in Croatia got no further than building a 5,000 ft tunnel half way up a mountain in Omis with no way to drive into it before running out of cash.

Engineers began work on the tunnel nearly six years ago but this week admitted they had, quite literally, come to the end of the road, 900ft up the mountainside.

"The intention had been to improve communications and link two towns - Omis and Split - with a new road," explained one official.

"Unfortunately the tunnelling was more difficult than we'd anticipated and we ran out of budget," they added.

Now regional transport officials have to decide whether to find more funds for the project or write it off.

"It's more trouble than it's worth. There's a nice road that goes round the mountain. It's slower but it isn't going to put my taxes up," said one resident.
