Kathryn Quinn

A brave mum leapt to her death trying to save her four-year-old son when he fell into a the foundations of a building site in central China.

Zhang Haixia, 36, hurled herself down a narrow drainage shaft at the site in Wuhan, Hubei, province when son Wan slipped and fell in.

But the pair suffocated when tons of earth and mud fell on top of them trapping them in the two feet wide hole until they were spotted the next morning.

Firefighters found tragic Zhang trying to shield her son with her own body with her arms outstretched towards the youngster.

The pair had moved onto the site temporarily so they could be close to dad An Xiangyi before the family left the city for China's traditional Spring Festival.

"This is breaking my heart. My wife would have defended our son to her last breath," he said.
