Rubble and Strife

Kathryn Quinn

Horrified Lin Sun has told how he got that sinking feeling when the foundations holding up this 200ft high cliff-side road collapsed underneath him.

Tons of rock holding up the road - in Ganluo, Sichuan province, southern China - broke away from the cliff leaving just a six inch thick ribbon of cement still standing.

"I heard a load crack and banging and rumbling and the whole road began to buck and twist," said Sun.

"When I looked down I saw there was absolutely nothing left holding up the road. It was just clinging on to nothing," he added.

Engineers say record rainfall and flooding caused a river below the road to erode the bedrock.

"Eventually there was nothing left to hold up the road and everything crashed into the water," said one.
