A woman who says her home was stolen by government planners caused chaos in southern China when she hurled herself off a bridge in protest.

The woman - who claims her family were paid a fraction of the land's true worth - kept police and rescuers at bay for two hours before plunging 50ft into the river below in Guangzhou, Guangdong province.

Lia Sun, 31, was plucked to safety by divers from the Zhujiang River police.

"The woman has a very strong belief that her family has been cheated.

"We have contacted the officials in the village she comes from and they have agreed to investigate," said a police spokesman.
