Swot a Queue

Kathryn Quinn

Queue would have thought it? Hundreds of students waiting in a massive line - just to get into a university library.

The scene - from Sichuan University, in Chengdu, southern China - is typical of colleges across the country as students prepare for their final exams later this month.

Results can determine whether students go on to join China's growing mega-rich class of businessmen or join the ranks of the migrant workers.

"I started queuing at 5am because the library is the best place to study," said science student Wang Lu.

"Everybody wants to get in so you have to start early," he explained.

One British academic said: "You wouldn't get a queue like that over here unless they were giving away free beer in the students' bar."
