Swiss foxhunters have refused to apologise after police were called when they hung the rotting body of a dead fox from a sign to show people taking part in a hunt at the weekend where to go.
The Berner Jägerverband hunting association which organised the fox hunt with dogs and horses said that local restaurants sometimes hung furs on signs to show the way and there was no difference when they decided to do the same for a fox hunt.
Spokesman Lorenz Hess said: "It was a good hunt – people locally are very pleased when we act to keep the number of foxes down. And it was a good hunt, we managed to finish off five foxes.
"I don't know what all the fuss is about, I don't even know anybody that supposed to what we do because whenever we come across hikers or people in the area they always wave and friendly."
He said he could not explain why the police said that the body was rotten because he claimed most of the flesh had been removed and it was just the fur that had been hung up.
The picture of the dead fox was snapped by a driver after it was left hanging from the sign pointing to Schwandiweg in Bern, Switzerland.
Police were called and remove the body of the dead animal.
Police spokeswoman Alice Born said that the body which had a pungent odour had been nailed to a wooden construction and that they were seeking a talk with hunting officials to discuss the matter.
