Sports Slay

In Britain, school sport days are under fire from health and safety experts in case children hurt themselves.

But in China, they do things differently.

These five-year-olds in eastern China - dressed up as People's Army shock troops complete with mini-Kalashnikov assault rifles - were taking part in the main race at a kindergarten sports day in Yuquan, Zhejiang province.

The youngsters were pretending to invade the disputed Diaoyu Islands, currently controlled by Japan.

After crawling underneath simulated barbed wire with a Chinese flag in their teeth, they then claimed an island for the people's republic.

Ownership of the uninhabited territory has caused huge protests in China following Japan's recent purchase of the only three islands it did not control.

"We had other races like relay races and obstacle races but although sports are important, so it securing China's territory," explained a spokesman for the school.

"It’s good to cultivate patriotism from childhood and I feel very proud seeing my girl acting like a real solider" said one parent.
