Great Haul of China

Kathryn Quinn

These Chinese postal workers took a licking as millions of people celebrated the country's Singles Day yesterday (sunday) - by sending themselves parcels.

By tradition, singletons spend the day with other unpartnered pals and send themselves presents to celebrate their solo status.

But the growth of the holiday - started by students in the 1990s - has paralysed the country's postal and private courier systems.

Many - like this one in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, southern China - could not cope with the avalanche of parcels and cards piling up outside their offices.

"It is now the busiest online shopping day of the whole year. We are so busy we don't have room to keep the packages inside," said one manager.
