A party to mark the opening of a new giant brewery in northern China was a real blast - when organisers set off hundreds of giant rockets to mark the event.

The 10ft high rockets were so powerful they had to be launched with their own parachutes to avoid injuring spectators when they came down.

The 82,000 square metre site in Taiyuan, Shanxi province, will produce thousands of bottles of Fenjiu, a high strength rice liquor and China's most popular drink.

"It's traditional to set off firecrackers at a new building site to scare away bad spirits but we wanted to go one better," said a spokesman for the firm.
