Kathryn Quinn

A teacher who found banknotes worth 150,000 GBP stuffed up the chimney of a house he bought has been told he can't keep it because the last owner had intended to donate it to charity.

Astonished Dirk Engel, 48, discovered a cache of now defunct deutsche marks when he swept the chimney of the property in Duesseldorf, Germany.

But officials have ruled they had been hidden there in the 1970s by the previous resident who had left the house to charity when he died without any heirs.

The hew homeowner will get a 5,000 GBP finder's fee.
