Sick Argument

Kathryn Quinn

Lawyers acting for a Russian woman who killed five people after running them over at a crossing in Moscow said she should be let off because she was taking her boyfriend to hospital with indigestion – and it was a medical emergency.

Yekaterina Zaul, 24, was also drunk when she crashed her Land Rover into a group of pedestrians near the city of Staraya Kupavna, some 20 kilometers to the east of Moscow. The dead included a seven-year-old girl.

Her boyfriends unhurt in the crash and in the end did not carry on to hospital after the incident – saying that he was feeling better after he was quizzed by police.

Regional police did not comment on Zaul’s story, but opened a case over the incident that may land her in prison for up to nine years if charged and convicted of gross traffic rules violations that resulted in multiple deaths.
