A bid by pals of a German couple to create a spectacular dance video to beat the Jill and Kevin wedding dance ended in a police alert in the German town of Suedlohn near to Muenster.
As part of the video action the best man and pals were filmed grabbing a bridesmaid and bundling her into a car, then roaring off.
But eyewitnesses called police after seeing the seven masked men grab the young girl, and police cars set off in pursuit.
They lost the car in heavy traffic and set up a road block and scrambled a police helicopter, without locating the suspected kidnappers.
A police spokesperson said: "It was only when we went public and appealed for witnesses that a woman called to explain they were behind it, and apologised."
Police are now considering whether to pass the cost of the operation over to the wedding guests for failing to warn police of their filming action.
