More than 5,000 chickens suffocated to death as they crushed each other trying to get out of their giant hen-house during a 35 degree heatwave in Studenzen, Austria.

Poultry farmer Johann Kicker blamed a build up of heat in the coop saying: "The chickens tried to get out for fresh air by the doors.

"But they blocked each other panicked. As they tried to force their way out, they crushed each other and many of them then suffocated to death."
