These pigs jumped at the chance to save their bacon when the butcher's truck carrying them from market overturned in a crash.

The porkers - on their way to the chop in Chengdu, Sichuan province, southern China - fled along the highway caused a 90 minute traffic jam.

But the bid for freedom didn't last long when butcher Li Hu persuaded other motorists and passers by to help round up the 18 beasts.

"Another transporter carried them away for the butcher. At least those pigs had an extra hour or two of freedom," said one motorist.
