Tens of thousands of young chickens drowned during freak floods when a river burst its banks in Shanghai, eastern China.

Farmers say more than 13,000 birds were killed in the flash flood which covered the land in nearly 15 inches of water.

"There was nothing we could do. We have water pumps but there was nowhere to pump it to. The rain just kept coming," said farmer Yu Lin.

Workers spent a whole day collecting bodies and storing them in waste bags for incineration.

One village recorded nearly seven inches of rainfall during a 24-hour period over Sunday and Monday.
