A surgeon who delayed treating a break-dancing champion's broken leg until it had to be amputated is being investigated by health officials in Lazarevskoye, Russia.

Dancer Yevgeny Smirnov, 25, had to have the leg removed after gangrene set in following a week in hospital where, his family claim, he received no treatment.

Surgeon Sergey Starikovsky has been suspended pending an investigation.

One friend, who visited him in hospital a few days after he'd been hit by a car, said: "The leg was a terrible sight: it was swollen, the wound was literally bubbling. That meant that he already had gangrene.

"Yevgeny said that he could not endure the pain any more."
