Legendary assault rifle the AK-47 is to get its own branded range of souvenirs and accessories after talks between the manufacturers and the inventor's family in Russia.

Makers of the gun - a favourite of terrorists all over the world thanks to its foolproof design - are hoping to follow other gunsmiths like Smith and Wesson and Beretta into the lucrative merchandising market.

"The extended use of the brand would be focused on high quality products which comply with Kalashnikov’s values – reliability and failure-free operation," said Yelena Filatova, a spokeswoman for the Izhmash factory, where the firearms are manufactured.

Gunsmith Mikhail Kalashnikov, now 92, invented the planet's most famous gun in 1946 and experts say there are more than 100 million AK-type rifles in use in the world today.
