Last Post for Junk Mail

A fed up householder is suing firms which send him junk mail in a test case that could kill off the industry.

Johann Hebenstreit - from Tadten , Austria - says that because he has a 'no junk mail' sign beside his letter box, anyone sending or delivering unsolicited post is in breach of privacy laws.

Hebenstreit has sent a series of demands for 500 GBP compensation to hundreds of firms around the country and is even suing his postman.

Garden centre owner Christian Sattler: "It would be a financial disaster for thousands of businesses if this goes ahead."

The country's postal service is said to be taking legal advice, but in the meantime several of the firms have reportedly already paid up.
