Wee Problem

Kathryn Quinn

Swimmers who pee in a beauty spot lake have been blamed for the death of more than 500 fish found floating on the surface.

Fed up fishermen in Eichbaum, Germany, say the urine has caused a massive growth of blue-green algae which has poisoned the water.

"Swimmers who urinate in the lake are introducing a lot of phosphate," said Manfred Siedler, spokesman for the Hamburg Angling Association.

"We calculate that each swimmer produces half a litre of urine every day in the lake," he added.

Local waterways authorities have closed the lake to swimmers while they treat the water.
