Hot Off The Press

Kathryn Quinn

These books were evidently hot off the press after a long break caused one of the wheels to heat up – setting fire to a tyre that then set the books alight as they were travelling along the road in Xiasi town, in southwest China’s Guizhou province.

Driver Hu Fong, 26, had stopped the truck after noticing smoke and by the time he climbed out of the wheel was already on fire.

He said: "I had a fire extinguisher in the But it didn't make any difference, the time was well and truly alight and he quickly set fire to the rest of the load."

The blaze destroyed all of the brand-new hardback books worth several hundred thousand pounds as well as the lorry.

It took firefighters one hour to bring the blaze under control and the smoke forced the road to be closed for several hours as the blaze was tackled and then the cleanup operation was carried out.
