Small Fly

Kathryn Quinn

Aviation experts have chopped the emergency helicopter down to size - with this micro version of mini-chopper designed to help rescuers to explore confined spaces that normal aircraft couldn't reach.

The craft - dubbed the Firelfy - can build up its own map of the terrain below and shares images picked up by other mini-helicopters by their three cameras on their linked onboard computers.

Designers say the craft weigh less than 3lbs each and measure just 25 inches across which mean that could easily work out how get inside disaster-hit buildings and report back.

"They navigate themselves and by working out in real time where all the obstructions are," explained one designer.

Scientists from Switzerland's Zurich University came up with the craft as part of an EU-funded project to design new micro aircraft that could be used by emergency services of for traffic monitoring.
