Cafe a day good for the heart

Kathryn Quinn

A cup of coffee a day could be as good for your health as jogging and lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes, a new medical study has revealed.

Scientists from Lausanne Hospital in Switzerland tested 16,000 coffee fans from all over Europe and the USA and found that regular coffee drinking lowered their blood pressure.

Study spokesman Idris Guessous explained: "It is comparable to jogging. Even when a patient's general blood pressure increases, jogging and regular sport helps reduce blood pressure."

Scientists discovered that coffee seems to have a direct affect on the behaviour of a particular gene called CYP1A2 which processes the digestion of caffeine in the liver.

But the coffee can only work on blood pressure if people don't indulge in that other vice - smoking, says the study published in the medical journal 'Human Molecular Genetics.'
