Unlucky Died Chickens

Kathryn Quinn

A farmer is suing planners in China after they demolished his chicken farm - with 30,000 of the helpless birds still trapped inside.

Furious Zheng Chunli - whose farm in Zhengjia, Shaanxi province, western China, was confiscated by officials to make way for a luxury apartment block - says he was not given a chance to evacuate the coops before the bulldozers moved in.

"They just crushed the buildings and the birds inside them. A few managed to escape but it must have been a horrible way to go," said Zheng, who wants 10,000 GBP to compensate him for the loss of his farm and hens.

But planning officials say Zheng was given plenty of notice over the confiscation of his farm.

"He refused to co-operate with us so in the end we had to use force," said one.
