Angelina Jolie honoured in Sarajevo

Kathryn Quinn

Angelina Jolie is to be made an honorary citizen of Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

She had been widely criticised in the area for her movie "In the country of blood and honey" which locals claimed give a false impression of the atrocities that took place.

But now the 36-year-old actress, who recently got engaged to her long-term partner Brad Pitt, is being rewarded for bringing the plight of the war in Bosnia to the world with her directorial debut.

Announcing the honour to local media a city official said they wanted to thanke her for her "contribution to the preservation of truth about the war in Sarajevo and in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and her dedication to the protection of the principles of humanity, democracy, tolerance and solidarity between people of different ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds".

The award will be handed out in a ceremony at the city's parliament on May 3.
