Join Lenin

Kathryn Quinn

Football fans at the Euro 2012 are to be greeted by the first new statue of Marxist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin to be erected in the Ukraine since the collapse of the USSR.

The copper statue - commissioned by Communist supporters - is to be unveiled in Krasnoarmeisk to mark the 142nd anniversary of Lenin's birth in the country's Donetsk region, one of the co-hosts for this summer's soccer tournament.

The new monument comes after the country's 3 million GBP video promoting its bid to host Euro 2012 became a laughing stock when it used computer air-brushing to remove a 30ft statue of Lenin from its plinth in the capital, Kiev.
