A pair of schoolgirls who saved a pair of bears from starving to death at a bankrupt private zoo have been praised by animal welfare officials in Tomsk, Russia.
The girls - Regina Danilenko, 14, and Nikita Krylov, 15 - had been drawn into the zoo by the haunting howls of agony from the two bears and began feeding them buns and cakes.
"When we realised this was the only food they were getting we went to the police," explained Nikita.
Wildlife experts and police raided the zoo and rescued the bears, now undergoing medical care before being released back into the wild.
"There were the corpses of other animals in their cages and the bears were the only things left alive in there.
"They are only alive today because of the heroic actions of these girls," said a police spokesman.
Local businessman Sergei Shubin, 54, is facing animal cruelty charges.
