Fuelish brothers Benjamin, 18, and Markus Saenger, 19, were caught after siphoning diesel from cars after police followed a trail of spilt fuel.
The pair had rigged up a makeshift cart fitted with two giant canisters, but it sprung a leak, allowing cops to follow their trail at Neustrelitz in north eastern Germany.
The pair had decided to help themselves to diesel from other motorists because of the high price of fuel.
The two had already siphoned off 60 liters of diesel and were on their way home when officers spotted the diesel on the pavement, and followed the trail for 500 meters to catch the two teenage thieves.
A police spokesman said: "The pair face charges of theft and also of polluting the environment."
